Neurologist appt

Another appointment today with the neurologist. Our last appointment here was 6 months ago. They re-evaluated her MMSE or mini-mental state exam, and medication.

I recorded part of the MMSE with mom and the providers permission….

She scored an “11” six months ago, and “13” today. With 30 being normal and less then 12 is “severe dementia” today she is considered “moderate dementia”.

Personally, I take the results with a grain of salt, but I think Kristy getting her out daily and the senior center exercise groups are helping. Regardless, it was a new PA who conducted the test, scoring seems to be subjective. Such as, there was no clock face test done this time, which last time she failed miserably. And there was way too much prompting from the test giver. The medical side of me cringed knowing how wrong breaking down three step instructions to individual ones altered the results.

On average they expect a decline if 2-4 points yearly. Although, I know she has good days and bad days, and today was a good day for this test.

It’s so hard to say. She’s still in complete denial, or oblivious. I can only hope if I get this dreadful disease that I will be as unaware and optimistic as she is.

  1. Hopefully, there will be a cure, or a way found to stop, this horrible disease by the time your generation reaches our age group. Very grateful to Kristy, as well, providing some great quality of life for Karen. And her higher score, is in no small part, the care you give her. Happy Easter from our family to yours.

    • Yes, her speech is pretty bad. She’s unable to get a full sentence out 90% of the time. Thank you so much for following the blog and commenting! You have no idea how much it means to know that you know what we are dealing with. ❤
