Hair
Last night the whole family went to dinner at a Mexican restaurant and to Shaun’s friends clubhouse for a disk golf league get together. The boys swam and we all ate too much.
Today mom and I did some running around, grocery store, shampoos haircuts and styles at Austin Kade salon and a half sandwich at Great Harvest. I truly think she is forgetting how to wash her hair and shower properly. I dread the day I have to help her. Not that I cannot do it, I’ve sponged bath plenty of people in my life. But she is so modest and proud.
When she was done with her hair, she got up and went to the waiting room. A few seconds later she’s back at the stylist station shuffling through and tossing her supplies upset saying “I lost my thing!!”, I was still in the chair getting worked on, so I calmly said, “you came in with sunglasses and a cardigan, your sunglasses are on your head, and your wearing your cardigan.” She said, “no! I’m missing my thing!” Getting more upset by the second. By that time two stylists, their instructor and the receptionist were all looking for her “thing” so I got the instructors attention and let her know mom has Alzheimer’s and nothing was really missing. While mom was getting closer to calling everybody in the vicinity thief’s. She was pacing and fuming while the receptionist was trying to get her phone number for when they found the thing, which made her more upset because she doesn’t know any numbers, let alone her phone number. I got done and paid and we get out to the car where she found her wallet. “Oh there it is!” So back inside I go to a bunch of frazzled hair salon employees to explain the thing was in the car the whole time! Phew! At least they did a great job of cutting hair….

Sometimes I think talking to her is like talking to a drunk person. Very scattered, sometimes belligerent, no train of thought. I pushed record on a part of our car ride so family can get perspective of our daily talks. This particular conversation stems from driving past the high school and she remembered her high school science fair project….
Karen did place at a Science Fair at the University of Utah when she was in high school, which is probably what she is referring to. She talked a lot about that when she was with us. She included a lot of details then, but seems her memory has become fragmented on that subject. Thanks for the update. You are doing s super job, Katie.
