Today when we went grocery shopping mom grabbed her own cart. Before today she followed me around and I ask her what sounds good, she would shrug and say “Oh I don’t know, Clane would always do this for me!”. But today she was picking things off the shelves and putting them in her cart. Mostly copying what I was doing, I would remind her about things she mentioned that she wanted like bagels and tea. While in the dairy isle I had grabbed 2 gallons of milk, she watched me and said “that’s too much for me” I pointed to the area where there were 1/2 gallon milk, and she walked right past them. I didn’t correct her and waited to see if she could figure it out, eventually she did. (Upon getting home we realized it was actually buttermilk). The checkout line is a source of anxiety for her, she doesn’t know how to use her debt card, and gets a little embarrassed when I help. Then I had to point her towards her groceries a couple times after getting flustered with the checker. But she was feeling pretty good when we got to the parking lot saying “it’s been so long since I did that!”

  1. I take the blame for the bagels and tea! Karen and I had toasted bagels and tea every afternoon while she was here. One afternoon she seemed restless, so I said, let’s have a cup of tea (thinking she might reject it because of wow) but she said yes. And of course you have to have bagels to go with tea. Good times! Keep us posted, and we love the pictures, too!
