Update March 2026

Holy crap, I have to actually sit at a computer to write this. I’m usually inspired in the early morning hours to write when I’m on my phone and it shows.

Where to begin, well Grandma JoAnn passed away expectedly and surrounded by family and love. She did it on her own terms, without fear and almost had a giddyness in her last few weeks being able to plan her funeral and death like a big upcoming trip. It was such a contrast to my moms death. Karen’s was a long sad goodbye over many years, cause we just lost pieces of her slowly over many years, till she wasn’t recognizable in the end. But JoAnn was alert and cognizant and funny till her last day. (Book recommendation: “The Good Death” by Suzanne O’Brian) That book helped so much to prepare her and make this experience something memorable for everyone involved.

Now we are in the midst of her estate and trying to get the house prepared for sell when the probate wraps up. AND we have also decided it was just a grand old time to sell our house also. The remaining roots of Idaho Falls were ultimately severed with the loss of JoAnn. Although Shaun’s family had very deep roots in this town, we decided that there are greener pastures in the West. Hannah and Zac have settled in Portland and are pretty established in their careers. They are young and digging down there own roots. It’s become pretty obvious that Idaho is not ever going to be on any of our kids radars in the future.

We have obviously been drawn to Oregon since we originally bought the 30 acres a few years back. Although that Klamath county property is still an option, I think we are planning on settling on the outskirts of either Portland or Vancouver, near a major airport (PDX) and by Hannah. Right now that property has been proven to be somewhere where our offspring may not have the best experiences. They all want the city life for the time being.

So we will take the profits from our home sale to find a spot where we can build. It will have to be a few acres and without HOA or CCR oversight so we are able to develop it as we see fit. The plan is to find and buy land, get sewage, water and solar or electricity placed, then establish a Harvest Host type of experience to draw in travelers and WOOFERs who would like to help develop an self sufficient community where we could eventually host AirBNB and continue our Super Host status that we worked so hard on establishing over the last few years. Hopefully our current politics don’t get in the way of this plan.

Keep an eye on social media for video updates.
