Porch
So we’ve been wanting to redo our front concrete steps for a while. Spring wrecked havoc on them with the freeze/thaw cycles. I was watching mom sit at the kitchen table this morning eating her oatmeal and finding so much pleasure in watching the neighborhood kids at the park across the street. And it hit me! She needs a front porch with a rocking chair.
It would solve more problems then bad concrete. I’ve been wondering how to keep her on my property without locking her inside. Of course the backyard is fully enclosed, but the front has always been the issue. I’ve thought about fencing the whole yard in, which would be the other option. Or give her a porch with a vinyl fence and a gate a kindergartner could manipulate, which would be too hard for her to escape.
All my years of working the dementia unit at Wyoming State Hospital and rotations in memory care nursing homes for school, I never paid attention to the security measures they took, but it’s all coming back to me now that I have a flight risk on my hands. It’s much harder in a residential home.
I’m having a few builders give me a estimate early next week. This is what I’m thinking….. enough room for at least two chairs for sitting and watching the world pass by.
