I used to think that Alzheimer’s/Dementia was about forgetting people and things .. I used to think it was about repeating sentences and asking the same question 100 times. How I wish that this was all it is about. This cruel disease does not just rob you out of your memory .. it robs you out of everything.. it robs you out of your dignity and your senses .. you don’t know if you are hungry or thirsty and soon you’ll forget how to swallow.. you don’t know if you are hot or cold and if you did you wouldn’t know what a blanket is for .. you wouldn’t know if you want to use the toilet, or take a shower, or simply walk and you forget that you need to bend your knees in order to sit. You wouldn’t know what to do with your hands and if you did you will find your hands tearing tissue paper. You don’t know which words to use or in which context. The people in the TV become real and the people in the room become strangers. Alzheimer’s/Dementia is cruel beyond words.
