ALZ Walk, parade of homes, lawyer

We kept busy this last week, too busy for mom I think. First we went to 4 houses on the parade of homes, still have a bunch more to see this week.

She looks like the belle of the ball making her entrance. Those dang shoe covers gave her a run for her money, even by the 4th house she could not understand that she had to put them on over her shoes and not use them as socks and put the shoes over them. We had to help her and she got really frustrated.

Then Saturday we did the Alzheimer’s Walk for a cure. Thanks to family members for helping me hit my goal and getting mom this fancy shirt

She walked the whole 2 miles. I didn’t know how mom would take this, because more then half the time she is in complete denial of having this dreadful disease, but she did really well today holding her blue flower high when they acknowledged those with Alzheimers, and she had a lot of fun walking, talking to others and even dancing.

Then church the next day. On Monday she had me look at her legs and oops. I realized we had done too much. She had very small burst blood vessels

Today it’s pretty much gone, but we have a doctors appointment today to make sure that’s all it is. That and an annual check up.

I also have an appointment today to see an Elder Lawyer to make sure all legal bases are covered and talk about money plans with her income with Wright Law Office downtown Shoup Ave. I went to their estate planning seminar 2 weeks ago.

Me Wright told me that 1/3 reasonable household expenses including groceries, utilities, rent/mortgage could be covered by mom’s income. And any additional expenses I would have to ask “is this something that I would purchase if mom were not here” making sure all purchases benefit her if coming from her account. Including vacations, and eating out.

I think the best way to track is using bank statements. Chase bank for her expenses and bank of Idaho and America first for our expenses.

I’m actually more confused then before about Medicare benefits if a assisted living facility is needed in the future. He told me to negotiate with a private company for rates and not use Medicare dollars.

I think I’ll put her savings in a higher interest account eventually and hope it’s never needed. Instead of using the pay down method of spending her assets down in order to qualify for a Medicare bed.

So much responsibility and uncertainties about the future. I feel overwhelmed.

  1. Congratulations to Katy and Karen for completing the walk! Will there ever be enough money for the research needed to cure this disease? A cure for Polio was found when Americans dug deep and worked hard. A cure was found for Polio in a couple years, I think the same thing could happen with Alzheimer’s!
