Winco

We had an Incident while grocery shopping today… first Saturday grocery shopping at Winco before a holiday is always a bad idea, but sometimes your only option. Jack, mom and I probably arrived at the busiest time of day. Right as we got to the produce section, mom calls out “I’m going on ahead!” Being vegetarian, I spend a lot of time in produce and bulk foods, which is also the most crowded area of Winco, so hurrying to catch up to mom was not easy. We crossed paths in dairy, and I told her my next stop, hoping no she would come with me but her independence runs strong some days so she told me she would see me up front, by the time we got up there I was scanning the checkout for her and didn’t see her. I sent Jack around to look and waited, thinking they were on the beverage isle. The lines are long of course so I got in one hoping they would catch up. Then I see them in a far away check out Jack helping her bag groceries. Now history of checkout lines and mom is not good. Concepts of credit/debit cards and the machine have been a futile effort for her to navigate. At best she hands the checker whatever money she has in her wallet and relying on an honest employee, they hand back the extra. I finished checkout of my own and meet a very confused and exasperated mom. We wheel our carts to the car while she’s saying, “that cashier must be new, he wouldn’t take my card!” She’s very upset and breathing fast. “I tried to give it to him 3 times! He just wouldn’t take it! Then he said, don’t worry about it.” I asked if she gave him some cash instead, knowing she had some, but not how much she had. She said “I don’t think so.” When we got home I checked her bank balance and there is no Winco charge. I’m hoping for a cash transaction but she may have got out with an exasperated checker and free groceries. I called Winco and left my name and number with the bookkeeper just in case they come up short.
